Anyone in the UK can call themselves a dog trainer. Seven checks that protect your dog and your money.
How Much Does Dog Training Cost in the UK?
Prices vary widely across the UK. What drives them and how to compare quotes without being misled.
Dog training prices vary a lot between trainers and areas, so one national figure is not very helpful. It is more useful to know what drives the price and what you are getting for it.
What affects the price
- Format. Group classes, one-to-one sessions, online coaching and residential training are priced very differently.
- Length. A single lesson, a block of sessions and a multi-week programme are not comparable.
- Trainer experience. Experienced trainers who handle difficult behaviour often charge more and may resolve things faster.
- The problem. Aggression and anxiety need more skill and time than puppy manners.
- Location. Costs in London and the South East usually differ from elsewhere in the UK.
How to compare quotes
Ask for the total cost in writing and what it includes: the number of sessions, follow-up support, any equipment and what happens if you need extra help. A low headline price with lots of extras may not be cheaper.
Cheapest is rarely best
Training that does not work is expensive, and harsh methods can make problems worse. Judge value by results and by how well the trainer teaches you, not just the price.
Does insurance help?
Dog insurance rarely covers obedience training, though some policies cover behavioural treatment when a vet refers your dog. Check the wording. Our dog insurance guide explains more.
