UK Dog Laws Every Owner Should Know
Microchipping, ID tags, dangerous dogs, livestock and local rules, in plain English.
Laws on dogs differ across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, and they change. This is a general overview, not legal advice. Check official government guidance for the rules where you live.
Microchipping
Dogs must be microchipped, and the keeper's details kept up to date on a database. Puppies must be chipped by eight weeks old, and breeders must register the chip before selling a puppy.
ID tags
In England and Wales, a dog in a public place must wear a collar with the owner's name and address on it. A phone number is a useful extra.
Dangerous dogs
It is an offence to allow a dog to be dangerously out of control, and in England and Wales that can apply in some private places too. Some types of dog are prohibited. XL Bully type dogs also became subject to additional rules in England and Wales in 2024. If you are unsure whether the law applies to your dog, take advice before you buy or rehome one.
Livestock and wildlife
Keep dogs on a lead around livestock. A dog that worries livestock can lead to prosecution, and farmers have legal protections.
Local rules
Councils can bring in local rules, such as requiring leads in parks, banning dogs from areas or requiring you to pick up after your dog. Look out for signs.
Northern Ireland
Owners in Northern Ireland also need a dog licence, and the same microchipping rules apply.
Insurance and responsibility
Owners are responsible for what their dogs do. Some dog insurance policies include third-party liability cover, so check what yours includes.
