How it works

From request to trainer in three steps

K9PN is a referral service. We do not train dogs. Trainers set their own prices and programs.

1. Tell us what you need

Share your dog’s age and breed, what you want help with, and your full postcode. It takes about two minutes and costs nothing.

2. We match you with a trainer

K9PN is a referral service. Based on what you need and where you live, we refer your request to a professional trainer who covers your area.

3. The trainer gets in touch

The trainer contacts you to talk through your goals, pricing and scheduling. You decide whether it is a fit.

What reactivity is

A reactive dog overreacts to something specific, such as other dogs, strangers, bikes or loud noise. Barking and lunging are usually a sign of fear, frustration or over-arousal rather than stubbornness, which is why punishment tends to make it worse.

The aim of training is to change how your dog feels about the trigger. That is done gradually, working at a distance where your dog can stay calm and rewarding relaxed behaviour, then closing the distance a little at a time.

Start with your vet

Pain, illness and some medications can cause or worsen reactive behaviour, so see your vet first, especially if the change is sudden or the behaviour involves aggression. For serious cases your vet may refer you to a qualified behaviourist.

Dog behaviourist or dog trainer in London?

The two jobs overlap. A dog trainer teaches skills such as walking on a loose lead or coming when called. A dog behaviourist looks at why a dog behaves the way it does, which matters most for fear, aggression, severe reactivity or separation anxiety, and often works alongside your vet. Neither title is protected in the UK, so check experience, methods and insurance, and look for membership of a body such as the Animal Behaviour and Training Council or the Association of Pet Behaviour Counsellors.

If you are not sure which you need in London, say so in the form. Describe what your dog does and when, and we will refer you to whichever suits it once one covers your area. For sudden changes in behaviour, see your vet first.

Reactivity in London

City life puts a reactive dog in front of a lot of triggers: narrow pavements, other dogs on busy routes, bikes, buses and crowds. In London that can mean the paths around Tower Bridge and Hampstead Heath, and on match days the streets near London match days.

A good trainer will help you plan walks at quieter times and on quieter routes while the training works, teach you to read your dog’s body language so you can step back before it reacts, and where useful introduce a comfortable muzzle as a safety tool, not a punishment.

What to avoid

Avoid harsh corrections, shouting, or forcing your dog to “face” the trigger. These can raise fear and make reactions worse. Choose a trainer who explains what they will do, uses rewards and will work at your dog’s pace.

London dog rules

London has 32 boroughs plus the City of London, and each can make its own dog rules, so what applies on your street can differ from the next borough. Councils in England and Wales can use Public Spaces Protection Orders to require leads, keep dogs out of areas, limit how many dogs one person walks and require you to pick up. Check your own borough’s website.

In the Royal Parks, dogs must be on a lead in Richmond Park and Bushy Park from 1 May to 31 July while the deer are giving birth, because a mother can chase or attack a dog even on a lead.

Common questions

Can a reactive dog be cured?

Many reactive dogs improve a lot with the right training, but progress depends on the dog, the trigger and how consistent you can be. A trainer will set realistic goals with you.

Should I use a muzzle?

A well-fitted basket muzzle that your dog has been trained to accept is a sensible safety tool for some dogs. A trainer can show you how to introduce it.

Is there a behaviourist in London?

We are building our UK network and will refer you to a behaviourist when one covers your area. For aggression or sudden changes, speak to your vet first.

Is K9PN a dog training company?

No. K9PN is a referral service and does not train dogs. We pass your request to a professional trainer who covers your area. It costs you nothing to send a request.
