Share your dog’s age and breed, what you want help with, and your full postcode. It takes about two minutes and costs nothing.
K9PN is a referral service. Based on what you need and where you live, we refer your request to a professional trainer who covers your area.
The trainer contacts you to talk through your goals, pricing and scheduling. You decide whether it is a fit.
Dog rules in Northern Ireland
Some rules apply across Great Britain. A dog must be microchipped by eight weeks old, with the owner’s details kept up to date. A dog in a public place must wear a collar with a tag showing the owner’s name and address. A dog that is dangerously out of control in a public place is a criminal offence, and the owner is responsible.
Northern Ireland has its own rules, including a dog licence for every dog. Beyond that, England and Wales use Public Spaces Protection Orders set by each council, while Scotland uses dog control notices under the Control of Dogs (Scotland) Act 2010. For walks in the countryside, read the Countryside Code (England and Wales) or the Scottish Outdoor Access Code.
How to choose a dog trainer
Dog training is not a regulated profession in the UK, so anyone can call themselves a trainer. Questions worth asking any trainer in Northern Ireland:
- Which methods do you use? Look for reward-based training and a trainer who can explain exactly what they will do with your dog.
- Do you hold public liability insurance, and what experience do you have with dogs like mine?
- Can I watch a class or session first, or speak to someone you have trained?
- If my dog’s behaviour might have a medical cause, will you work with my vet? For fear, aggression or sudden changes, see your vet first.
The Kennel Club and the RSPCA both publish free guidance on training and behaviour.
