French Bulldog: what to know
What owners love, and what you must know first.
Suits flats, but needs short, cool walks.
The flat face causes brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome (BOAS) in many dogs.
Overheats easily, which can be fatal in hot weather or cars.
Vertebral malformations, skin fold infections and allergies are common.
Many need surgery or ongoing care. Insurance is wise.

French Bulldog key facts
French Bulldog origin
The breed developed in 19th-century England and France from small bulldogs, and became fashionable as a companion in Paris. It is now among the UK’s most popular breeds, which has raised welfare concerns.
Temperament and family life
French Bulldogs are playful, affectionate and often clownish. They are usually good with families and can be stubborn. They are not guard dogs.
Exercise, grooming and living in the UK
- Climate. Keep cool; avoid exercise in warm weather and never leave in a car.
- Exercise. Short walks, not long runs.
- Care. Clean skin folds and watch weight.
- Cost. Budget for insurance and possible surgery.
Health: what to ask for
Vets and welfare groups, including the British Veterinary Association, urge buyers to think carefully about brachycephalic (flat-faced) breeds because of BOAS, spinal malformations, eye problems, skin disease and heat stroke. Many French Bulldogs are bred through artificial insemination and delivered by caesarean. Look for breeders who health-test parents (including airway assessment), prefer longer muzzles and open nostrils, and are honest about problems. Ask your vet before you commit.

How K9PN matches you with a professional
K9PN is not a marketplace and we do not sell dogs. We refer people to experienced, independent professionals, and we look at openness about the dogs and their parents, health testing, written contracts, and honest aftercare. We are still building our UK network, so put your full postcode in the form and we will tell you if we can match you.
Please note
This page is general information, not veterinary, legal or financial advice. Dog law differs between England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, and prices change, so check current details with the seller, your vet and the official sources linked.
Common questions
Are French Bulldogs healthy?
Many have serious inherited problems, especially breathing and spine disease. Responsible breeding reduces but does not remove the risk.
How much do French Bulldog puppies cost in the UK?
Prices are often high and vary widely. A very low price is a scam warning. See the cost and scams guides.
Can French Bulldogs be left alone?
For short periods, if cool and comfortable. They prefer company.
Do French Bulldogs need much exercise?
No: short, cool walks. Avoid warm weather.
Are French Bulldogs good family dogs?
Often yes, but the health costs are a major factor.
Does K9PN sell or train protection dogs?
No. K9PN is a referral service and does not breed, sell or train dogs. We pass your request to a professional who covers your area, if we can match you. It costs nothing to send a request. We are still building our UK network.
