A referral service, not a seller
What you can expect when you send a request.
Our guides list what to ask any seller or trainer: health tests, contracts, training and aftercare.
It costs nothing to send a request, and you decide whether to work with whoever contacts you.
From request to trainer in three steps
K9PN is a referral service. We do not train dogs. Trainers set their own prices and programs.
Share your dog’s age and breed, what you want help with, and your full postcode. It takes about two minutes and costs nothing.
K9PN is a referral service. Based on what you need and where you live, we refer your request to a professional trainer who covers your area.
The trainer contacts you to talk through your goals, pricing and scheduling. You decide whether it is a fit.
What is IGP?
IGP stands for Internationale Gebrauchshund-Prüfung, the international working dog test, formerly called Schutzhund. A trial scores three phases: tracking, obedience and protection. Dogs work through levels, and many clubs ask for a basic companion dog test first.
Ring sport and others
Ring sport (French or Belgian Ring) has no tracking phase and uses obedience, jumps and protection with a helper in a suit. Mondioring and KNPV-style work are also practised by some handlers. Rules differ by organisation, so ask each club which one it follows.
Which dogs suit bite sports?
Belgian Malinois, German Shepherds and Dutch Shepherds are most common. The dog needs drive, confidence, athleticism and a sound body.
Finding a club in the UK
Bite-sport clubs are fewer and further apart than in some countries, so expect to travel. Look for experienced helpers, clear safety rules and humane methods. The Kennel Club does not run bite sports, so go through specialist clubs. Tell us your postcode and we will tell you if we can match you.
How K9PN matches you with a sport dog professional
K9PN is not a marketplace and we do not sell dogs. We refer people to experienced, independent professionals. We look at: real working-dog experience; stability and control before any protection work; openness (you can see the dogs, the parents and the training); handler training and aftercare; and honest advice on the law and insurance. Our buying guide lists the questions to ask any seller.
The law and your responsibility
This page is general information, not legal, insurance or veterinary advice. Dog law differs between England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, so check the rules that apply where you live before you buy. Our UK dog laws guide has links to the official sources.
Common questions
Is Schutzhund legal in the UK?
Yes, as a sport, but owners remain responsible under the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991 and the training must be humane under the Animal Welfare Act 2006.
Is IGP the same as Schutzhund?
Essentially yes. Schutzhund is the older name for the same sport.
Are there IGP clubs in the UK?
Yes, but fewer than in some countries. Tell us your postcode and we will tell you if we can match you.
Can my pet dog do bite sport?
Only if it has the drive, confidence and health. A club can assess the dog.
Does bite sport make dogs aggressive?
Done well, it builds control and the dog works only on command. Done badly, it can create problems, so choose experienced people and fair methods.
Does K9PN sell or train protection dogs?
No. K9PN is a referral service and does not breed, sell or train dogs. We pass your request to a professional trainer or working-dog breeder who covers your area. It costs nothing to send a request. We are still building our UK network, so put your full postcode in the form and we will tell you if we can match you.
