Police dog and security dog training in the UK
UK police forces and private security companies use dogs for patrol, search and detection. Police dogs are generally sourced and trained through force programmes, while private security and some specialist handlers use independent trainers. K9PN refers people to professionals who offer this training. We do not train or sell dogs.

A referral service, not a seller
What you can expect when you send a request.
Our guides list what to ask any seller or trainer: health tests, contracts, training and aftercare.
It costs nothing to send a request, and you decide whether to work with whoever contacts you.
From request to trainer in three steps
K9PN is a referral service. We do not train dogs. Trainers set their own prices and programs.
Share your dog’s age and breed, what you want help with, and your full postcode. It takes about two minutes and costs nothing.
K9PN is a referral service. Based on what you need and where you live, we refer your request to a professional trainer who covers your area.
The trainer contacts you to talk through your goals, pricing and scheduling. You decide whether it is a fit.
How police dogs are sourced
UK police forces generally source and train their own dogs, often through breeding programmes and approved suppliers, and the dogs belong to the force. That is why "police dogs for sale" is a difficult search: forces do not usually sell dogs to the public, although retired dogs are sometimes rehomed through the force.
Security dog training
Private security companies use dogs and handlers for patrol, search and detection. Private security work may need licensing from the Security Industry Authority, and the Guard Dogs Act 1975 applies to guard dogs on premises. There is also a British Standard for security dogs, so ask providers which standards they follow.
What to ask a security or K9 trainer
- What standards do the dogs and handlers meet?
- What is your own police, military or security background?
- How are handlers trained, and how often are teams reassessed?
- What insurance and records do you provide?
- Which laws and licences apply to the work?
Detection and other roles
Detection dogs, such as spaniels and Labradors, are a separate field with different breeds and standards. Ask for providers that specialise in the role you need.
How K9PN matches you with a security or K9 training professional
K9PN is not a marketplace and we do not sell dogs. We refer people to experienced, independent professionals. We look at: real working-dog experience; stability and control before any protection work; openness (you can see the dogs, the parents and the training); handler training and aftercare; and honest advice on the law and insurance. Our buying guide lists the questions to ask any seller.
The law and your responsibility
This page is general information, not legal, insurance or veterinary advice. Dog law differs between England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, so check the rules that apply where you live before you buy. Our UK dog laws guide has links to the official sources.
Common questions
Can I buy a police dog in the UK?
Not usually. Forces generally source their own dogs, though retired dogs are sometimes rehomed through the force. If you want a working or protection dog, see our protection dogs page.
What breeds do UK police use?
German Shepherds and Belgian Malinois are common for patrol, with spaniels and others for detection.
Do I need a licence to use security dogs?
Private security work may need SIA licensing and the Guard Dogs Act 1975 applies to guard dogs on premises. Check the current rules.
Can I train a dog for security work?
You can start with obedience, but security and protection work should be done with experienced professionals.
How long does security dog training take?
It depends on the role and standards. Ask providers for a written timeline.
Does K9PN sell or train protection dogs?
No. K9PN is a referral service and does not breed, sell or train dogs. We pass your request to a professional trainer or working-dog breeder who covers your area. It costs nothing to send a request. We are still building our UK network, so put your full postcode in the form and we will tell you if we can match you.
