Protection dog FAQ UK

Protection dog questions for UK buyers, answered

Buying a protection dog in the UK raises questions that US websites do not answer, because UK law, insurance and breed rules are different. This page answers the most common ones plainly. K9PN is a referral service and does not sell dogs. We are still building our UK network, so we will tell you if we can match you.

  • 25 questions in five groups
  • Free to request, takes about two minutes
  • K9PN does not sell dogs
Find a protection dogTell us about your home and what you need, with your full postcode, so we can look for a professional who covers your area.
K9PN is a referral service and does not train dogs. Your details are shared with the trainer we refer you to so they can contact you about your request. See our Privacy Policy for how we use your data and your rights under UK GDPR.
Key takeaways
  • Owning a protection-trained dog is not banned in the UK, but you are fully responsible for its behaviour under the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991.
  • Banned types, including the XL Bully type, are prohibited. Dogs are judged on physical characteristics, so check before you buy.
  • Choose stability and control over aggression, and use professionals who show you the parents, the training and the paperwork.
How K9PN works

A referral service, not a seller

What you can expect when you send a request.

We refer, we do not sell

K9PN does not breed, sell or train dogs. We pass your request to an experienced professional who serves your area.

You get the right questions

Our guides list what to ask any seller or trainer: health tests, contracts, training and aftercare.

Free, no obligation

It costs nothing to send a request, and you decide whether to work with whoever contacts you.

How it works

From request to trainer in three steps

K9PN is a referral service. We do not train dogs. Trainers set their own prices and programs.

1. Tell us what you need

Share your dog’s age and breed, what you want help with, and your full postcode. It takes about two minutes and costs nothing.

2. We match you with a trainer

K9PN is a referral service. Based on what you need and where you live, we refer your request to a professional trainer who covers your area.

3. The trainer gets in touch

The trainer contacts you to talk through your goals, pricing and scheduling. You decide whether it is a fit.

The basics

What is a protection dog?

A dog trained to protect its handler and household in a controlled way. It is calm and social day to day, alerts to problems and defends only on command.

What is the difference between a protection dog, a guard dog and a security dog?

A protection dog works with a handler on command. A guard dog guards premises and falls under the Guard Dogs Act 1975. A security dog works with a trained handler, often for a security company. See guard dogs.

Which breeds do people choose?

Belgian Malinois, German Shepherds (Alsatians), Rottweilers, Dobermanns and Cane Corsos are most asked about. See the breed comparison.

Are protection dogs common in the UK?

Less than in the US. Supply from specialist trainers and breeders is smaller, so expect to wait or travel.

Law and insurance

Is it legal to own a protection-trained dog in the UK?

Yes, but you must keep it under control under the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991, and banned types are illegal. See the UK law guide.

What happens if my dog injures someone?

You can face prosecution and civil claims. Penalties can include fines, a ban on keeping dogs, prison and destruction of the dog. Take legal advice.

Is the XL Bully ban relevant?

The XL Bully type is prohibited in England and Wales, with rules elsewhere in the UK. Dogs are judged by physical characteristics, so check gov.uk, especially for mastiff-type dogs and crosses.

Will my insurance cover a protection dog?

Not automatically. Declare the breed and training, and check third-party liability cover. Landlords and leases may restrict dogs.

Do I need a licence?

There is no general licence for protection dogs in Great Britain, but other rules apply and Northern Ireland has dog licensing.

Buying

How much does a protection dog cost in the UK?

It varies widely by breed, lines and training. See the cost guide for what drives the price.

Puppy or trained adult?

A trained adult has a known temperament and is ready sooner but costs more. A puppy costs less but needs a couple of years of raising and training.

What health tests should I ask for?

BVA/Kennel Club hip and elbow scores for the parents, plus breed-specific tests such as heart screening for Dobermanns.

Does Lucy's Law apply?

In England, yes, if you buy a puppy under six months. You must buy direct from the breeder or a rescue. See the buying guide.

Can I import a working dog?

Some people do, but it adds cost and risk and you must follow current gov.uk rules. See the dog first and use a reputable source.

Training and safety

How long does protection training take?

It depends on the dog and the goal. Be wary of promises of a finished dog in days.

Is bite training legal?

Training is legal when humane and within the Animal Welfare Act 2006. Hand-held shock collars are banned in Wales and England. You remain responsible for the dog.

Are protection dogs safe around children?

A stable, well-socialised, properly trained dog can be, with supervision. No dog is risk-free. See are protection dogs safe?

Where can I find protection dog classes?

Bite-work clubs are fewer in the UK, so expect to travel. See protection dog training UK.
