Rottweiler key facts
Rottweiler origin
The Rottweiler comes from Rottweil in Germany, where it drove cattle and guarded property. It was later used as a police and guard dog and is a popular family guardian today.
Temperament and protection ability
A well-bred, well-socialised Rottweiler is calm, confident and loyal. Poor breeding, isolation and harsh handling can produce a dog that is fearful or aggressive, which is a serious problem at this size.
Living with one in the UK
- Size. Needs space and strong control on the lead.
- Children. Often gentle with its own family, but always supervise.
- Climate. Can overheat in hot weather.
- Insurance. Some insurers and landlords restrict the breed, so check.
Health tests to ask for
Ask for BVA/Kennel Club hip and elbow scores, heart screening and a record of cancer or early deaths in the line. Rottweilers can also have cruciate ligament problems and bloat. Have your own vet examine the dog.

How K9PN matches you with a Rottweiler professional
K9PN is not a marketplace and we do not sell dogs. We refer people to experienced, independent professionals. We look at: real working-dog experience; stability and control before any protection work; openness (you can see the dogs, the parents and the training); handler training and aftercare; and honest advice on the law and insurance. Our buying guide lists the questions to ask any seller.
The law and your responsibility
This page is general information, not legal, insurance or veterinary advice. Dog law differs between England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, so check the rules that apply where you live before you buy. Our UK dog laws guide has links to the official sources.
Common questions
Is a Rottweiler a good guard dog?
Yes, it is a natural guardian, but it needs socialisation, training and an experienced owner. UK law still holds you responsible.
Are Rottweilers banned in the UK?
No. They are not a prohibited type, but any dog must be kept under control under the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991.
Are Rottweilers good with children?
A well-bred, well-socialised Rottweiler can be gentle with its family, but its size means you must supervise.
How much is a Rottweiler in the UK?
Prices vary with lines and health testing. See our cost guide.
Rottweiler or German Shepherd for protection?
Rottweilers are heavier and calmer; German Shepherds are more trainable and versatile. Ask a professional about the individual dog.
Does K9PN sell or train protection dogs?
No. K9PN is a referral service and does not breed, sell or train dogs. We pass your request to a professional trainer or working-dog breeder who covers your area. It costs nothing to send a request. We are still building our UK network, so put your full postcode in the form and we will tell you if we can match you.
