Trained protection dogs for sale in the UK: what "trained" should mean
A trained protection dog is an adult dog that already has obedience, control and protection work in place and is placed with you and your family. "Trained" is not a regulated term in the UK, so it can mean very different things. K9PN refers people to professionals who place trained dogs. We do not sell dogs.
- Fully trained dogs vs. started dogs
- Free to request, takes about two minutes
- A professional contacts you. K9PN does not sell dogs
- "Trained" is not regulated in the UK. Ask to see each skill demonstrated.
- Handler training and aftercare matter as much as the dog.
- Trained adults cost more but have a known temperament.
What a trained protection dog should do
Ask any seller to show you each of these, not just describe them.
Reliable recall, heel, down-stay and a release on command.
Relaxed with family and guests, and controllable around children.
Warn of an unknown presence without acting on its own.
Defend the handler when told, and stop on release.
You and your family are trained to command it, with aftercare.
A referral service, not a seller
What you can expect when you send a request.
K9PN does not breed, sell or train dogs. We pass your request to an experienced professional who serves your area.
Our guides list what to ask any seller or trainer: health tests, contracts, training and aftercare.
It costs nothing to send a request, and you decide whether to work with whoever contacts you.
From request to trainer in three steps
K9PN is a referral service. We do not train dogs. Trainers set their own prices and programs.
Share your dog’s age and breed, what you want help with, and your full postcode. It takes about two minutes and costs nothing.
K9PN is a referral service. Based on what you need and where you live, we refer your request to a professional trainer who covers your area.
The trainer contacts you to talk through your goals, pricing and scheduling. You decide whether it is a fit.
Started, trained or fully trained?
| Stage | Usually means | Ask to see |
|---|---|---|
| Started dog | Young dog with basic obedience and early drive work | Temperament testing and the parents |
| Trained dog | Obedience and control proven, some protection work | The dog working with its trainer, and with you |
| Fully trained dog | Reliable control and protection on command at maturity | A live demonstration and a family handover |
None of these terms is regulated, so judge the dog, not the label.
How to assess a trained dog
- Watch it work, then watch it be calm: in the kennel, in the car, with strangers and with children.
- Ask the trainer to hand you the lead and see how the dog responds to you.
- Check the release (the "out") several times, not once.
- Ask for health tests, microchip and vaccination records, and Kennel Club paperwork where relevant.
- Get a written contract with aftercare and return terms.
Why handler training matters
A trained dog only stays trained if you can handle it. A good seller teaches you and your family to command the dog, set rules and maintain training, and is available afterwards. Without that, the training fades and the dog can become a liability.
Costs and the law
Trained dogs cost far more than puppies because of the months of professional work behind them. Read our cost guide and UK protection dog law guide before you commit.
How K9PN matches you with a trained protection dog professional
K9PN is not a marketplace and we do not sell dogs. We refer people to experienced, independent professionals. We look at: real working-dog experience; stability and control before any protection work; openness (you can see the dogs, the parents and the training); handler training and aftercare; and honest advice on the law and insurance. Our buying guide lists the questions to ask any seller.
The law and your responsibility
This page is general information, not legal, insurance or veterinary advice. Dog law differs between England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, so check the rules that apply where you live before you buy. Our UK dog laws guide has links to the official sources.
Common questions
Are there fully trained protection dogs for sale in the UK?
Yes, from professional trainers and working-dog programmes, though supply is smaller than in the US. Availability varies, so tell us your postcode and what you need.
What does a fully trained protection dog cost?
Prices vary widely with the breed, the lines and the amount of training. Get written quotes and ask what is included. See our cost guide.
Is a trained adult better than a puppy?
A trained adult has a known temperament and is ready sooner, but costs more. A puppy costs less but needs a couple of years of raising and training with no guarantee how it will turn out.
Will a trained protection dog fit a family?
It can, if the dog is stable and was trained to be controlled at home. Be honest about your household and ask to see the dog with children and visitors.
Do I need a licence for a protection dog?
There is no general licence for owning a protection dog in Great Britain, but other laws apply and Northern Ireland has dog licensing. Check the rules where you live.
Does K9PN sell or train protection dogs?
No. K9PN is a referral service and does not breed, sell or train dogs. We pass your request to a professional trainer or working-dog breeder who covers your area. It costs nothing to send a request. We are still building our UK network, so put your full postcode in the form and we will tell you if we can match you.
