Common dog training needs in Belfast
Most requests we expect from Belfast owners fall into these groups.
Teaching a dog to walk without pulling on pavements, in parks and past other dogs.
A call-back that holds up around distractions, built in steps and used safely.
Barking and lunging at dogs, people or noise, and the fear that often sits behind it.
Gradual practice for dogs that cry, destroy things or panic when you go out.
Jumping up, resource guarding, chewing and other issues, starting with why they happen.
From request to trainer in three steps
K9PN is a referral service. We do not train dogs. Trainers set their own prices and programs.
Share your dog’s age and breed, what you want help with, and your full postcode. It takes about two minutes and costs nothing.
K9PN is a referral service. Based on what you need and where you live, we refer your request to a professional trainer who covers your area.
The trainer contacts you to talk through your goals, pricing and scheduling. You decide whether it is a fit.
Dog trainers near you in Belfast
If you have searched for a dog trainer near you in Belfast, the quickest route is to tell us what you need help with and your full postcode. We use the postcode to work out which trainer or behaviourist is closest to you, so you are not sent someone an hour away. That covers Ormeau, Malone, Stranmillis, Holywood, Dundonald, Newtownabbey, Lisburn, Carrickfergus, Bangor or anywhere else around Belfast.
Most owners ask for one of four things: puppy training, a loose lead and reliable recall, help with a reactive or anxious dog, or help with a dog that cannot be left alone. Each has its own page for Belfast with local places to practise and the rules to know: puppy training in Belfast, recall and lead training in Belfast, reactive dog training and behaviourists in Belfast and separation anxiety help in Belfast.
Walking and training around Belfast
Belfast sits in a bowl of hills, and that shapes the walks. Cave Hill and the paths around Belfast Castle give steep, open ground with views over the lough, while Botanic Gardens, Ormeau Park and the Lagan towpath are flat, busy and full of other dogs, joggers and cyclists. Down on the waterfront, the Titanic Quarter has wide paths, wind and a lot of visitors.
Because leads are expected in public places, loose-lead walking matters more here than in many cities. A Belfast trainer will usually start with a calm walk past other dogs and bikes, then build a recall for the places where your dog is allowed more freedom, such as private land and the open countryside outside the city.
Football days in Belfast
Windsor Park, home of Linfield, sits in south Belfast, and clubs such as Glentoran, Cliftonville and Crusaders play across the city. Match days bring crowds, flags and noise to the surrounding streets, and international fixtures at Windsor Park are bigger still.
If you live along those routes, a dog that is comfortable with crowds and sudden noise has an easier life. Trainers can build that gradually, with distance first and a settle cue the dog can use anywhere. K9PN has no affiliation with any football club.
Dog rules in Belfast
Belfast City Council’s dog owners page says you must keep your dog on a lead in public places in Belfast. You must pick up after your dog, and failing to do so can bring an £80 fixed penalty notice. No more than four dogs may be under your control in public at one time. Greyhounds, whippets and lurchers must be kept under control and muzzled in public, and no more than two may be exercised by one person.
In Northern Ireland every dog must be licensed and microchipped. nidirect gives the licence fee as £12.50 for 12 months, with reduced rates for some owners, and says dogs must be microchipped at eight weeks old before you apply. Keeping a dog without a valid licence can lead to a fine of up to £1,000. The council also lists £80 fixed penalties for licensing, straying and exceeding the dog limit.
How to choose a dog trainer in Belfast
Dog training is not a regulated profession in the UK, so anyone can call themselves a trainer. Questions worth asking any trainer in Belfast:
- Which methods do you use? Look for reward-based training and a trainer who can explain exactly what they will do with your dog.
- Do you hold public liability insurance, and what experience do you have with dogs like mine?
- Can I watch a class or session first, or speak to someone you have trained?
- If my dog’s behaviour might have a medical cause, will you work with my vet? For fear, aggression or sudden changes, see your vet first.
The Kennel Club and the RSPCA both publish free guidance on training and behaviour.

Common questions
Do you cover Lisburn, Newtownabbey and Bangor as well as Belfast?
Yes. Put your full postcode in the form (all BT postcodes are fine) and we will refer you to a trainer who covers your area as soon as one does.
Does my dog really have to be on a lead in Belfast?
According to the council, yes: dogs must be kept on a lead in public places in Belfast. Check its page for the current wording and the separate guidance for parks.
Do I need a dog licence in Northern Ireland?
Yes. Every dog needs a licence and must be microchipped. nidirect lists the fee and the exemptions, and an unlicensed dog can lead to a fine.
Do I need a dog trainer or a dog behaviourist in Belfast?
For skills such as puppy training, lead walking and recall, a trainer is usually right. For fear, aggression or severe anxiety, a behaviourist is often better, and your vet can advise. Tell us what your dog does in the form and we will refer you to the right kind of help.
Is K9PN a dog training company?
No. K9PN is a referral service and does not train dogs. We pass your request to a professional trainer who offers the kind of training you want and covers your area. It costs you nothing to send a request.
How much does dog training cost in Belfast?
Trainers set their own prices and they vary with the format, the trainer and your dog’s needs. The trainer will talk you through pricing when they contact you, with no obligation.
