Common dog training needs in Birmingham
Most requests we expect from Birmingham owners fall into these groups.
Teaching a dog to walk without pulling on pavements, in parks and past other dogs.
A call-back that holds up around distractions, built in steps and used safely.
Barking and lunging at dogs, people or noise, and the fear that often sits behind it.
Gradual practice for dogs that cry, destroy things or panic when you go out.
Jumping up, resource guarding, chewing and other issues, starting with why they happen.
From request to trainer in three steps
K9PN is a referral service. We do not train dogs. Trainers set their own prices and programs.
Share your dog’s age and breed, what you want help with, and your full postcode. It takes about two minutes and costs nothing.
K9PN is a referral service. Based on what you need and where you live, we refer your request to a professional trainer who covers your area.
The trainer contacts you to talk through your goals, pricing and scheduling. You decide whether it is a fit.
Dog trainers near you in Birmingham
If you have searched for a dog trainer near you in Birmingham, the quickest route is to tell us what you need help with and your full postcode. We use the postcode to work out which trainer or behaviourist is closest to you, so you are not sent someone an hour away. That covers Solihull, Sutton Coldfield, Edgbaston, Harborne, Moseley, Kings Heath, Walsall, Wolverhampton, Dudley or anywhere else in the West Midlands.
Most owners ask for one of four things: puppy training, a loose lead and reliable recall, help with a reactive or anxious dog, or help with a dog that cannot be left alone. Each has its own page for Birmingham with local places to practise and the rules to know: puppy training in Birmingham, recall and lead training in Birmingham, reactive dog training and behaviourists in Birmingham and separation anxiety help in Birmingham.
Walking and training around Birmingham
Birmingham is famous for its canals, and the towpaths around Gas Street Basin and Brindleyplace are a daily walk for many dogs: narrow, with cyclists and boats and water at the edge. Further out, Cannon Hill Park, Sutton Park and the green spaces of the suburbs offer big open walks, with ponds, joggers and plenty of other dogs.
A Birmingham trainer will usually start with the basics that make those walks calm: a loose lead, a recall that holds up around other dogs, and good manners at the pub garden or café on the way back. Puppies in particular benefit from seeing the city early, with calm exposure to traffic, trams, canals and crowds.
Football days in Birmingham
Aston Villa at Villa Park and Birmingham City are the two big clubs in the city, and on match days the streets around the grounds fill with supporters. If you live near a ground, a dog that can stay calm among crowds, chants and traffic is much easier to live with.
Trainers can help a nervous dog get used to this step by step, or a dog that pulls and barks at every passing group of fans. K9PN has no affiliation with any football club.
Dog rules in Birmingham
Birmingham City Council’s dog control orders require dogs to be on a lead on public roads, adjoining footways and verges, and to be put on a lead when an authorised council officer asks. Dogs are excluded from marked children’s play areas and school land, no more than four dogs may be exercised at once, and you must pick up after your dog. Breaches can lead to a fixed penalty notice.
Assistance dogs are exempt. Rules can change when orders are renewed, so check the council’s page for the current wording.
How to choose a dog trainer in Birmingham
Dog training is not a regulated profession in the UK, so anyone can call themselves a trainer. Questions worth asking any trainer in Birmingham:
- Which methods do you use? Look for reward-based training and a trainer who can explain exactly what they will do with your dog.
- Do you hold public liability insurance, and what experience do you have with dogs like mine?
- Can I watch a class or session first, or speak to someone you have trained?
- If my dog’s behaviour might have a medical cause, will you work with my vet? For fear, aggression or sudden changes, see your vet first.
The Kennel Club and the RSPCA both publish free guidance on training and behaviour.

Common questions
Do you cover Solihull, Sutton Coldfield and the Black Country?
Yes. Put your full postcode in the form (B, WS, WV and DY postcodes are all welcome) and we will refer you to a trainer who covers your area as soon as one does.
How many dogs can I walk at once in Birmingham?
Under the council’s dog control orders no more than four dogs may be exercised on public land at once. Check the council’s page for the current rules.
Is it worth doing puppy classes in Birmingham?
Good puppy classes teach foundations, safe socialisation and early handling. Look for small classes run by an instructor who uses reward-based methods, and watch a class before you book.
Do I need a dog trainer or a dog behaviourist in Birmingham?
For skills such as puppy training, lead walking and recall, a trainer is usually right. For fear, aggression or severe anxiety, a behaviourist is often better, and your vet can advise. Tell us what your dog does in the form and we will refer you to the right kind of help.
Is K9PN a dog training company?
No. K9PN is a referral service and does not train dogs. We pass your request to a professional trainer who offers the kind of training you want and covers your area. It costs you nothing to send a request.
How much does dog training cost in Birmingham?
Trainers set their own prices and they vary with the format, the trainer and your dog’s needs. The trainer will talk you through pricing when they contact you, with no obligation.
