Common dog training needs in Cardiff
Most requests we expect from Cardiff owners fall into these groups.
Teaching a dog to walk without pulling on pavements, in parks and past other dogs.
A call-back that holds up around distractions, built in steps and used safely.
Barking and lunging at dogs, people or noise, and the fear that often sits behind it.
Gradual practice for dogs that cry, destroy things or panic when you go out.
Jumping up, resource guarding, chewing and other issues, starting with why they happen.
From request to trainer in three steps
K9PN is a referral service. We do not train dogs. Trainers set their own prices and programs.
Share your dog’s age and breed, what you want help with, and your full postcode. It takes about two minutes and costs nothing.
K9PN is a referral service. Based on what you need and where you live, we refer your request to a professional trainer who covers your area.
The trainer contacts you to talk through your goals, pricing and scheduling. You decide whether it is a fit.
Dog trainers near you in Cardiff
If you have searched for a dog trainer near you in Cardiff, the quickest route is to tell us what you need help with and your full postcode. We use the postcode to work out which trainer or behaviourist is closest to you, so you are not sent someone an hour away. That covers Roath, Cathays, Canton, Llandaff, Whitchurch, Rhiwbina, Penarth, Barry, Caerphilly or anywhere else around Cardiff.
Most owners ask for one of four things: puppy training, a loose lead and reliable recall, help with a reactive or anxious dog, or help with a dog that cannot be left alone. Each has its own page for Cardiff with local places to practise and the rules to know: puppy training in Cardiff, recall and lead training in Cardiff, reactive dog training and behaviourists in Cardiff and separation anxiety help in Cardiff.
Walking and training around Cardiff
Cardiff is a compact city with a lot of green in it. Bute Park runs along the River Taff behind the castle, Roath Park has its lake and gardens, and the paths around Cardiff Bay give a flat, open walk with cyclists, runners and a good deal of water at the edge. Beyond the city, the Taff Trail and the hills of the valleys are close enough for a weekend walk.
That mix suits training work. A Cardiff trainer can use a quiet corner of a park to build a reliable recall, then add the distractions of a busy riverside path, then take it to a cafe terrace or a bayside promenade. Rain is common, so a dog that settles happily in a wet coat is a more useful dog.
Football days in Cardiff
Cardiff City play at the Cardiff City Stadium in Leckwith, and the Principality Stadium in the city centre hosts rugby and big concerts. On event days the streets near either ground fill with crowds, singing and traffic, and the noise carries a long way.
Dogs that live nearby, or that have to walk through town on a busy day, do better when they have practised settling around crowds and sudden noise. A trainer can build that up gradually, starting at a distance and rewarding calm. K9PN has no affiliation with any football club.
Dog rules in Cardiff
Cardiff Council’s dog control Public Spaces Protection Order sets out the rules for dogs in the city. Dogs must be on a lead in the council’s public cemeteries. Elsewhere in listed public spaces, an authorised officer or a police constable can direct you to put your dog on a lead where it is reasonably necessary to prevent a nuisance. Dogs are excluded from enclosed children’s play areas, games areas and school premises listed in the order.
You must pick up your dog’s faeces straight away and carry something to pick it up with, which you may be asked to show. The council describes the fixed penalty as up to £100. The order was made in 2021 for an initial three years, so check the council’s page for the current wording and any extension. Under UK rules, every dog must be microchipped and registered by eight weeks old, and you can be fined up to £500 if not.
How to choose a dog trainer in Cardiff
Dog training is not a regulated profession in the UK, so anyone can call themselves a trainer. Questions worth asking any trainer in Cardiff:
- Which methods do you use? Look for reward-based training and a trainer who can explain exactly what they will do with your dog.
- Do you hold public liability insurance, and what experience do you have with dogs like mine?
- Can I watch a class or session first, or speak to someone you have trained?
- If my dog’s behaviour might have a medical cause, will you work with my vet? For fear, aggression or sudden changes, see your vet first.
The Kennel Club and the RSPCA both publish free guidance on training and behaviour.

Common questions
Do you cover Penarth, Barry and Caerphilly as well as Cardiff?
Yes. Put your full postcode in the form (CF and NP postcodes are fine) and we will refer you to a trainer who covers your area as soon as one does.
Do dogs have to be on a lead in Cardiff parks?
Not everywhere. Under the council’s order, leads are required in its cemeteries, and an officer can direct you to use one elsewhere if it is reasonably necessary. Look for signs and check the council’s page for the current rules.
Is recall training worth it near the river and the bay?
Very. Water, wildlife, cyclists and other dogs all make a reliable recall more valuable. A trainer can build one step by step and show you when to keep your dog on a lead anyway.
Do I need a dog trainer or a dog behaviourist in Cardiff?
For skills such as puppy training, lead walking and recall, a trainer is usually right. For fear, aggression or severe anxiety, a behaviourist is often better, and your vet can advise. Tell us what your dog does in the form and we will refer you to the right kind of help.
Is K9PN a dog training company?
No. K9PN is a referral service and does not train dogs. We pass your request to a professional trainer who offers the kind of training you want and covers your area. It costs you nothing to send a request.
How much does dog training cost in Cardiff?
Trainers set their own prices and they vary with the format, the trainer and your dog’s needs. The trainer will talk you through pricing when they contact you, with no obligation.
