How it works

From request to trainer in three steps

K9PN is a referral service. We do not train dogs. Trainers set their own prices and programs.

1. Tell us what you need

Share your dog’s age and breed, what you want help with, and your full postcode. It takes about two minutes and costs nothing.

2. We match you with a trainer

K9PN is a referral service. Based on what you need and where you live, we refer your request to a professional trainer who covers your area.

3. The trainer gets in touch

The trainer contacts you to talk through your goals, pricing and scheduling. You decide whether it is a fit.

What puppy training covers

Good puppy training is mostly about foundations: toilet training, learning to settle, gentle handling (paws, ears, collar and lead), sit, down and come when called, and calm manners with people and other dogs. It also covers biting and chewing, which are normal in young puppies and fixable with the right routine and plenty to chew.

Keep sessions short, a few minutes at a time, reward the behaviour you want and avoid punishment. Most trainers will also help you plan the day so a puppy gets enough sleep, which matters more than most owners expect.

Socialising a puppy in Cardiff

Socialisation means safe, positive first experiences of the world, not meeting every dog you pass. Your vet will tell you when your puppy has had enough vaccinations to walk where other dogs go, and until then you can carry your puppy to see traffic, people and noise from a safe distance.

Cardiff gives you plenty to practise with: Cardiff Castle, Bute Park, Cardiff Bay are all good places for calm exposure to crowds, bikes and other dogs once your vet says it is safe. Short, relaxed visits beat long exhausting ones.

Classes or 1-2-1?

Puppy classes suit most families: they give controlled practice around other puppies and good foundations. 1-2-1 sessions suit puppies that are shy, over-excited or living in a busy household, and owners who want help with a particular problem such as biting or toilet training. Watch a class before you book and look for small groups and reward-based methods.

Cardiff postcodes and rules to know

Cardiff Council’s dog control Public Spaces Protection Order sets out the rules for dogs in the city. Dogs must be on a lead in the council’s public cemeteries. Elsewhere in listed public spaces, an authorised officer or a police constable can direct you to put your dog on a lead where it is reasonably necessary to prevent a nuisance. Dogs are excluded from enclosed children’s play areas, games areas and school premises listed in the order.

You must pick up your dog’s faeces straight away and carry something to pick it up with, which you may be asked to show. The council describes the fixed penalty as up to £100. The order was made in 2021 for an initial three years, so check the council’s page for the current wording and any extension. Under UK rules, every dog must be microchipped and registered by eight weeks old, and you can be fined up to £500 if not.

Common questions

When can I start puppy training in Cardiff?

As soon as your puppy comes home, usually from about eight weeks. Home routines such as toilet training and settling can start on day one, and your vet will advise when your puppy can go to public places and classes.

How long are puppy training sessions?

Short. A few minutes at a time, several times a day, is more effective than one long session. Puppies tire quickly and learn best when they stay keen.

Is it too late to train an older puppy or adolescent?

No. Adolescent dogs often get harder before they get easier, and a trainer can help with pulling, jumping up and recall at any age.

Is K9PN a dog training company?

No. K9PN is a referral service and does not train dogs. We pass your request to a professional trainer who covers your area. It costs you nothing to send a request.
