Cane Corso key facts
Cane Corso origin
The Cane Corso descends from large Italian mastiff-type dogs used to guard farms and property. It nearly disappeared in the 20th century and was rebuilt by Italian enthusiasts. It is now recognised by the Kennel Club.
Temperament and protection ability
A well-bred, well-socialised Cane Corso is calm, confident and loyal, and reserved with strangers. Poor breeding and weak socialisation can produce a nervous or aggressive dog, which at this size is dangerous and a legal risk.
Living with one in the UK
- Control. Needs strong obedience and a confident handler in public.
- Space. A secure garden helps.
- Law. It is not a prohibited type, but dogs are judged on physical characteristics, so read our law guide and take advice if you are unsure.
- Insurance and rented homes. Some insurers and landlords restrict large mastiff-type dogs.
Health tests to ask for
Ask for BVA/Kennel Club hip and elbow scores, eye tests (eyelid problems are reported) and cardiac checks for the parents. Bloat is a risk in large, deep-chested dogs. Have your own vet examine the dog.
Is a Cane Corso right for you?
It may suit you if
- You have experience with large guardian breeds
- You want a calm, imposing guardian
- You can give consistent training for years
- You have space and a budget for a large dog
- You buy from a health-tested line
Think twice if
- You are a first-time owner

What to ask a seller
- Can I meet both parents?
- What are the hip, elbow, eye and heart results?
- How has the dog been socialised?
- What does the seller advise on UK law and insurance?
- What aftercare and return terms are included?
See the UK buying guide for contracts, Lucy's Law and red flags.
How K9PN matches you with a Cane Corso professional
K9PN is not a marketplace and we do not sell dogs. We refer people to experienced, independent professionals. We look at: real working-dog experience; stability and control before any protection work; openness (you can see the dogs, the parents and the training); handler training and aftercare; and honest advice on the law and insurance. Our buying guide lists the questions to ask any seller.
The law and your responsibility
This page is general information, not legal, insurance or veterinary advice. Dog law differs between England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, so check the rules that apply where you live before you buy. Our UK dog laws guide has links to the official sources.
Common questions
Is the Cane Corso banned in the UK?
No, it is not on the prohibited list. But dogs are judged on physical characteristics, so check gov.uk and take advice, especially about crosses.
Is a Cane Corso a good guard dog?
It is a natural guardian, but the Guard Dogs Act 1975 and the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991 apply, and it needs training and an experienced owner.
How much is a Cane Corso in the UK?
Prices vary with lines and health testing. See our cost guide, and be wary of low prices.
Are Cane Corsos good with children?
Some are gentle with their own family’s children, but their size demands supervision.
Can I insure a Cane Corso?
Often, but some insurers restrict large guardian breeds. Compare policies and declare the breed.
Does K9PN sell or train protection dogs?
No. K9PN is a referral service and does not breed, sell or train dogs. We pass your request to a professional trainer or working-dog breeder who covers your area. It costs nothing to send a request. We are still building our UK network, so put your full postcode in the form and we will tell you if we can match you.
