What trainers can help with

Common dog training needs in Leeds

Most requests we expect from Leeds owners fall into these groups.

Puppy training

Toilet training, handling, early socialisation and the foundations that stop small problems growing.

Lead walking

Teaching a dog to walk without pulling on pavements, in parks and past other dogs.

Recall

A call-back that holds up around distractions, built in steps and used safely.

Reactive and anxious dogs

Barking and lunging at dogs, people or noise, and the fear that often sits behind it.

Being left alone

Gradual practice for dogs that cry, destroy things or panic when you go out.

Behaviour problems

Jumping up, resource guarding, chewing and other issues, starting with why they happen.

Dog trainers near you in Leeds

If you have searched for a dog trainer near you in Leeds, the quickest route is to tell us what you need help with and your full postcode. We use the postcode to work out which trainer or behaviourist is closest to you, so you are not sent someone an hour away. That covers Headingley, Chapel Allerton, Roundhay, Horsforth, Otley, Wetherby, Pudsey, Morley or anywhere else in West Yorkshire.

Most owners ask for one of four things: puppy training, a loose lead and reliable recall, help with a reactive or anxious dog, or help with a dog that cannot be left alone. Each has its own page for Leeds with local places to practise and the rules to know: puppy training in Leeds, recall and lead training in Leeds, reactive dog training and behaviourists in Leeds and separation anxiety help in Leeds.

Walking and training around Leeds

Leeds has some of the best dog-walking in the north of England. Roundhay Park, Kirkstall Abbey and the Aire valley, Temple Newsam and the canal towpath at Leeds Dock all sit within the city, and the Yorkshire Dales and Wharfedale are a short drive away. Dogs here meet cyclists, runners, farm animals on the edge of the city and a lot of other dogs.

Leeds owners often ask for help with recall, pulling on the lead and calm behaviour on busy paths. A good trainer will build a recall you can rely on, then teach you how to use it safely near livestock, water and roads.

Football days in Leeds

Leeds United play at Elland Road, south of the city centre, and match days bring crowds, noise and traffic to the area and the main routes in. If you live nearby, it is worth teaching your dog to stay calm around crowds, chanting and sudden noise.

That can be built gradually, starting at a distance from the action and rewarding calm behaviour. A trainer can show you how, and how to teach a settle cue that works at the pub, in the car or in the garden. K9PN has no affiliation with any football club.

Dog rules in Leeds

Leeds has a Dogs in Public Spaces Protection Order (PSPO No. 1 of 2025, in force from 24 March 2025 to 23 March 2028). Dogs must be on a lead and under close control on roads, footpaths and verges next to roads, and on the signed “dogs on leads” sites listed in the order. Dogs are excluded from signed exclusion areas such as children’s play areas, and officers can direct you to put your dog on a lead.

One person may walk no more than four dogs at once (six for insured professional dog walkers). You must remove dog faeces immediately and carry a bag. A fixed penalty notice is £100, reduced to £80 if paid within ten days.

How to choose a dog trainer in Leeds

Dog training is not a regulated profession in the UK, so anyone can call themselves a trainer. Questions worth asking any trainer in Leeds:

  • Which methods do you use? Look for reward-based training and a trainer who can explain exactly what they will do with your dog.
  • Do you hold public liability insurance, and what experience do you have with dogs like mine?
  • Can I watch a class or session first, or speak to someone you have trained?
  • If my dog’s behaviour might have a medical cause, will you work with my vet? For fear, aggression or sudden changes, see your vet first.

The Kennel Club and the RSPCA both publish free guidance on training and behaviour.

Common questions

Do you cover Headingley, Horsforth and the rest of the Leeds area?

Yes. Put your full postcode in the form, and we will refer you to a trainer who covers your area as soon as one does.

How many dogs can I walk at once in Leeds?

Under the city’s PSPO one person may walk no more than four dogs, or six for insured professional dog walkers. Check the council’s page for the current rules.

Can a trainer help with recall near livestock?

A trainer can build a strong recall, but livestock is a different risk. In the countryside keep your dog on a lead near livestock and follow the Countryside Code, however good the recall.

Do I need a dog trainer or a dog behaviourist in Leeds?

For skills such as puppy training, lead walking and recall, a trainer is usually right. For fear, aggression or severe anxiety, a behaviourist is often better, and your vet can advise. Tell us what your dog does in the form and we will refer you to the right kind of help.

Is K9PN a dog training company?

No. K9PN is a referral service and does not train dogs. We pass your request to a professional trainer who offers the kind of training you want and covers your area. It costs you nothing to send a request.

How much does dog training cost in Leeds?

Trainers set their own prices and they vary with the format, the trainer and your dog’s needs. The trainer will talk you through pricing when they contact you, with no obligation.
