Common dog training needs in Sheffield
Most requests we expect from Sheffield owners fall into these groups.
Teaching a dog to walk without pulling on pavements, in parks and past other dogs.
A call-back that holds up around distractions, built in steps and used safely.
Barking and lunging at dogs, people or noise, and the fear that often sits behind it.
Gradual practice for dogs that cry, destroy things or panic when you go out.
Jumping up, resource guarding, chewing and other issues, starting with why they happen.
From request to trainer in three steps
K9PN is a referral service. We do not train dogs. Trainers set their own prices and programs.
Share your dog’s age and breed, what you want help with, and your full postcode. It takes about two minutes and costs nothing.
K9PN is a referral service. Based on what you need and where you live, we refer your request to a professional trainer who covers your area.
The trainer contacts you to talk through your goals, pricing and scheduling. You decide whether it is a fit.
Dog trainers near you in Sheffield
If you have searched for a dog trainer near you in Sheffield, the quickest route is to tell us what you need help with and your full postcode. We use the postcode to work out which trainer or behaviourist is closest to you, so you are not sent someone an hour away. That covers Hillsborough, Ecclesall, Nether Edge, Crookes, Rotherham, Dronfield, Hathersage or anywhere else in South Yorkshire and the Peak District edge.
Most owners ask for one of four things: puppy training, a loose lead and reliable recall, help with a reactive or anxious dog, or help with a dog that cannot be left alone. Each has its own page for Sheffield with local places to practise and the rules to know: puppy training in Sheffield, recall and lead training in Sheffield, reactive dog training and behaviourists in Sheffield and separation anxiety help in Sheffield.
Walking and training around Sheffield
Sheffield is hilly, wooded and full of green space. Endcliffe Park and Ecclesall Woods, the Porter Valley and the Peak District edges just beyond the city mean every walk is different, with rivers, steep paths, mountain bikes, sheep and ground-nesting birds. It is a great city for dogs, and a demanding one.
That makes recall, a reliable “leave it” and lead manners on narrow paths especially useful here. A Sheffield trainer will work on those and on settling after a long walk, so the dog that has been up a hill all morning can also relax in the house.
Football days in Sheffield
Sheffield has two big football clubs, Sheffield United at Bramall Lane and Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough, each with a loyal following. On match days the streets near either ground fill with supporters, and the noise carries.
If you live nearby, practise settling and calm walking among crowds before it becomes a problem. A trainer can help you teach a dog to stay relaxed when the street outside is loud. K9PN has no affiliation with any football club.
Dog rules in Sheffield
Sheffield City Council has not made a Public Spaces Protection Order for dogs. In September 2025 it agreed a dog walking code encouraging owners to keep dogs under control, use a lead where needed, keep dogs on a short lead from March to August in sensitive wildlife areas and take dog waste home. It also set out a voluntary registration scheme for professional dog walkers, who are advised to walk no more than six dogs at once.
In the Peak District and other open access land you must keep your dog on a lead between 1 March and 31 July under the Countryside Code, and on a lead around livestock at all times.
How to choose a dog trainer in Sheffield
Dog training is not a regulated profession in the UK, so anyone can call themselves a trainer. Questions worth asking any trainer in Sheffield:
- Which methods do you use? Look for reward-based training and a trainer who can explain exactly what they will do with your dog.
- Do you hold public liability insurance, and what experience do you have with dogs like mine?
- Can I watch a class or session first, or speak to someone you have trained?
- If my dog’s behaviour might have a medical cause, will you work with my vet? For fear, aggression or sudden changes, see your vet first.
The Kennel Club and the RSPCA both publish free guidance on training and behaviour.

Common questions
Do you cover Rotherham, Doncaster and the Peak District edge?
Yes. Put your full postcode in the form (S, DN and DE postcodes are fine) and we will refer you to a trainer who covers your area as soon as one does.
Does my dog need to be on a lead in the Peak District?
On open access land you must keep your dog on a lead between 1 March and 31 July, and on a lead around livestock at all times. See the Countryside Code for the details.
Can a trainer help with a dog that chases wildlife?
Yes, a trainer can help with chasing, but it often needs a management plan as well as training. Keep your dog on a lead anywhere livestock or ground-nesting birds are likely.
Do I need a dog trainer or a dog behaviourist in Sheffield?
For skills such as puppy training, lead walking and recall, a trainer is usually right. For fear, aggression or severe anxiety, a behaviourist is often better, and your vet can advise. Tell us what your dog does in the form and we will refer you to the right kind of help.
Is K9PN a dog training company?
No. K9PN is a referral service and does not train dogs. We pass your request to a professional trainer who offers the kind of training you want and covers your area. It costs you nothing to send a request.
How much does dog training cost in Sheffield?
Trainers set their own prices and they vary with the format, the trainer and your dog’s needs. The trainer will talk you through pricing when they contact you, with no obligation.
